Mangroves for the Future Thailand

These are excerpts from a photo book that was commissioned in 2017 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Marriott Hotels, and Mangroves for the Future Thailand. The book was given to guests to promote awareness, about the vital importance of mangrove forests and Thailand’s great rebuilding efforts, after the world’s deadliest Tsunami of 2004.

In 2004, a massive 9.1-magnitude earthquake ripped through an undersea fault in the Indian Ocean, creating a deadly Tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people, in a matter of seconds. It was the height of the tourist season in South East Asia. Massive waves traveled 500 mph across the Indian Ocean to the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations.

Despite a 90-minute time-lapse, locals and tourists were caught completely unaware of the imminent destruction. When the Tsunami hit land, it’s waves were as high as 17.4 meters, or 57 feet, and crashed onto the shores of more than a dozen countries, wiping many communities off the map, entirely.

Mangrove forests naturally protect coastlines from high ocean surges, rising sea waters, and Tsunamis. They are also the ocean’s nursery grounds, great carbon sequesters, and provide livelihoods to millions. Because of the widespread deforestation of mangrove forests, Marriott hotels and other beach-side resorts found themselves defenseless that year. And now, they are rebuilding and reforesting with the help of IUCN, MFF Thailand and thousands of local volunteers every year.

This book was given as a gift to Marriott hotel guests, government officials, conservationists, and others to raise awareness about the strong relationship between Marriott Hotels, IUCN, and Coastal Living Communities around the world.
